In the 2009 vintage, Vitkin Petite Sirah takes a dramatic turn that enhances its qualities and depth. A new vintner initiates an inquiry to the winery requesting that we examine his Petite Sirah vineyard before he decides whether or not to uproot it. The vineyard, it turns out, was planted by the winemaker and his father decades ago and was left to him as a living memento of his father. Assaf is very impressed with the vineyard and its potential and the exciting story, but makes it clear to the winemaker that several drastic changes must be made to the growing methods in order to achieve the quality inherent in it. It later turns out that the vineyard was planted in 1974 as an experimental plot for the Petite Sirah variety, which was brought from the University of California Davis variety collection a few years earlier. This is therefore the oldest Petite Sirah vineyard in the country. The instructions given were fully followed by the winemaker, resulting in an extraordinary harvest in terms of concentration and depth of flavors, but extremely low in terms of weight. Approximately 300 kg per dunam. The strength of the wine led to us extending its maturation time in barrels to 18 months, and with the exception of this figure, the winemaking methods and maturation regime in barrels are identical to previous vintages. The wine is composed of 40% from the original vineyards. and 60% from the new-old vineyard. The wine exhibits a fascinating combination of depth, power and complexity, great aromatics and an exceptionally long finish. The relatively cold harvest compared to the 2012 vintage gave the wine an elegant, multi-layered and fresher character.
